Kent State Shooting
- Occurred at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio (April 30, 1970)
- Nixon went on air and said that the US was going to invade Cambodia and that they needed to draft 150,000 more people
- This resulted in protest all across the campus and the students setting the ROTC building on fire
- 28 guardsman opened fired on the crowd which resulted in 4 dead, and 9 wounded
- Nixon was really passive with dealing with these protest considering the fact that these protest went on for 5 days and nothing was really done to try and calm it down, if anything it just escalated as time went on leading to the shootings
Vietnam War
- Nixon when he first came into Presidency, he tried to implement a tactic in which it tried to end the United States involvement in Vietnam
- Vietnamization: the United States army would train and give supplies to South Vietnam so that they would be able to defend themselves
- At the same time, Nixon’s administration secretly allowed for there to be bombings in Cambodia, which at the time was neutral
- These actions by Nixon came under great scrutiny, which resulted in massive protest across all of the United States
- Nixon did not cope well with the Vietnam War because he did not fulfill his promises and he was drafting many citizens, especially young Americans. This resulted in protests domestically and in regards with Vietnamization, it did not really help as South Vietnam eventually got taken over.
